Three at a time's a charm
Stonecrest By Joyce Crile on 9/29/2006
The odds are astronomical. Therefore, the thought of having triplets - and identical ones at that - didn't even enter their minds.Marge and Dick Horning's son, Jeff, and his wife, Janet Shander-Horning, were already parents to Mallory, 9, and Andrew, 6.But at age 40, Janet decided to have just one more baby. Shortly after confirming her pregnancy, the doctor detected more than one heart beat and predicted twins. Just a few weeks later, however, it was confirmed she was carrying triplets.

You've got a buddy in healthy living
Spruce Creek Country Club By Diane Brandley on 9/29/2006
The Buddies meet Friday mornings for exchange of health information, a weekly weigh-in, a little good-natured bantering and lots of support. Members will tell you this is not strictly a weight-loss club. Their focus is on health and healthful living. These men and women begin their meeting by joining hands and reciting a traditional mantra, which creates a bond of support that helps individuals who are struggling with a health or weight issue.

Hero relates harrowing WWII experience
Spruce Creek South By Bob Turner on 9/29/2006
What do you do when the guest speaker calls and informs you he will not be able to keep his commitment owing to sudden illness - and you have less than 24 hours to obtain a substitute? For the president of the Spruce Creek South Veterans Club, that was not too much of a problem.

Elda knows longevity
Spruce Creek South By Bob Turner on 9/23/2006
At 95-plus, Elda Clara Rothy can still do a fairly lively polka. The spry great-grandmother also continues to perform routine chores around the house.

Born in South Bend, Ind., she was one of seven children of Belgian immigrants.

"We moved to a small town named Mishawaka about 15 miles away, where I went to school in a wooden school house," she said and recalled the sighting of one of the first "horseless carriages" being driven around the small town. She reminisced about walking to the nearby train station with her siblings and waving to the Army troops at the depot during WWI.

Elda speaks fondly of her father, who apprenticed to be a tailor in the Old Country and had a small shop in Mishawaka that supported his family.

Unfortunately, he suffered a stroke at an early age while delivering finished goods to a customer and died shortly after, leaving his widow with five ...

Carving out a hobby
Spruce Creek Country Club By Diane Brandley on 9/23/2006
If you look into the display cabinet in the SCGCC Craft room, you will find an Indian staring back at you. He is carved from a single block of wood, and his chiseled features have the mark of a skilled artist. According to the craftsman, Bob Franza, the process is really the act of releasing the image that is within. A chip in an unexpected direction can influence the design.

Tentative touring
Stonecrest By Joyce Crile on 9/23/2006
There will be singing, dancing, instrumentals and comedy. In addition, Sonny Lerner said that he "plans for it to be fast-paced and filled with enthusiasm." I'm referring to our Variety Show, for which Sonny is the director, with assistant directors Emma Hopkins and Dodie Biggins. The show is scheduled for March 29, 30 and 31, 2007, which sounds like a long time away, but it "ain't." Not when you consider all the work involved.

Flu clinic a model of organization
Stonecrest By Joyce Crile on 9/15/2006

Marian Whitehead, Stonecrest's activities director, is organized, very much so at that. So, I wasn't surprised when I attended her organized Organizational Meeting for the fall flu shot clinic to be held for residents here at Stonecrest - not surprised, but very impressed. She even made a scale model of the clinic's physical set-up, including welcoming red carpets. (On anther note, Marian is well known around these parts for her clever and creative talents.)

Attending the meeting were 21 volunteers who will assist in running the clinic, most all of whom are repeats who had done the deed last year. Kudos to them for their willingness to give their time to our community - it involves three days of hard work and concentrated effort.

This will be the fifth year that Marian has run the clinic and, ...

Residents encouraged to join CERT
Spruce Creek South By Bob Turner on 9/15/2006

Perhaps Fred and Arlene Gerth were watching the projected path of Ernesto with more concern than anyone in Spruce Creek South

. Fred, commander of our Community Emergency Response Team, and Arlene, a zone leader, were in standby mode until it was certain we were out of harm's way. They both vividly recalled that past hurricanes Charley and Jean stretched the CERT organization to it's limit.

"I just do not know if we have the people to deal with another situation like those two," Fred lamented as he ran his finger over a list of volunteers that have taken formal training and received their certification from Marion County. "We are at a low of 37 from our high of 70." Arlene produced a map marked in zones and pointed out several areas that ...

Library volunteer's love of books is matched only by her dedication
Stonecrest By Joyce Crile on 8/25/2006
I can't throw them away - not even one. Could you?" Joyce Ryan asked. We were talking about books in general, and those in our Stonecrest library in particular. Joyce has been taking care of our hardcover books even before a "library" existed here.

Return to Arthurdale, W.V.
Spruce Creek Country Club By Diane Brandley on 8/25/2006
The year was 1932. Competition in the mining industry rendered residents in parts of West Virginia unemployed, destitute and without hope. The country was in the midst of its worst depression, and for some people there was no way out. In 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt took office.
