Library volunteer's love of books is matched only by her dedication
Stonecrest By Joyce Crile on 8/25/2006
I can't throw them away - not even one. Could you?" Joyce Ryan asked. We were talking about books in general, and those in our Stonecrest library in particular. Joyce has been taking care of our hardcover books even before a "library" existed here.

Return to Arthurdale, W.V.
Spruce Creek Country Club By Diane Brandley on 8/25/2006
The year was 1932. Competition in the mining industry rendered residents in parts of West Virginia unemployed, destitute and without hope. The country was in the midst of its worst depression, and for some people there was no way out. In 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt took office.

A Yankee in the Lone Star State
Stonecrest By Joyce Crile on 8/18/2006
Texas. I've been there a few times. The state is very much a part of me. My father was born there. Often, during my growing-up years, we'd take family vacations there. Years later, somewhere around the mid-1970s, my husband, Gary, who was a plant manager with the Nabisco Corp., accepted a transfer to Denison, Texas, where he manufactured Fleischmann and Blue Bonnet margarine.

Spruce Creek South By Bob Turner on 8/11/2006
If you were to ask a New York City taxi driver how to get to Carnegie Hall, you most likely would get the reply: "Practice, practice, practice." Raymond George Turner, of Summerfield, has been practicing music most of his life.

Grandkids Day brought plenty of fun
Spruce Creek Country Club By Diane Brandley on 8/11/2006
The Craft Room at the Horizon Center exploded with color. Bright visors sported multicolored names, stars and flowers. The air tinkled with the sound of wind chimes as tiny hands attached clay butterfly figures to their own creations.

Stonecrest By Joyce Crile on 8/11/2006
Hospice Thrift Stores are holding their quarterly Brown Bag Sale on today. Here's how it works: Purchase a brown bag at the store for a mere $4, then simply fill it up with great bargain clothing items. It will amaze you how much you can stuff into one bag.

These boots were made for sitting
Stonecrest By Joyce Crile on 8/4/2006
We were the first hatters in Stonecrest. We were known as the Happy Cresters and were 20 strong. Sadly, over the years we've lost members. Two have died, and a few have moved away. Also, some members of our group are very involved in church or volunteer work, and conflicts happen, resulting in more attrition.

Spruce Creek Country Club By Diane Brandley on 8/4/2006
In the year 122, the Roman Emperor Hadrian visited Britain. He surveyed the boundaries of his empire around Caledonia and realized how difficult it would be to establish control of this mountainous terrain and the people of the highlands known as the Picts.
